Extra lights on the crashbars?
Written by csury on 4/10/2011 at 05:25 pm

I replaced my front and rear turn signal bulbs with amber 68-SMD LED 1157
equivalents in front, and amber 68-SMD LED 1156 equivalents in back. I also
installed red 68-SMD LED 1157 equivalents for my brake and rear running lights
as well and am quite happy with the results.

The replacement bulbs came from eBay with pricing varying from $12 to $17 a
pair, shipping included.

My turn signals flash more quickly now, but the self-cancelling still works same
as it did before. I thought about installing a load resistor to slow the flash
rate down a bit but to be honest, the flash rate isn't unacceptably fast now.

The instant on-and-off of the LED bulbs plus their high intensity makes for very
noticeable flashing, much more noticeable that the ordinary 1156 and 1157 bulbs
that used to be there.

something like an Arduino could replace the stock unit and would then be able to
support LEDs. However, I haven't done it yet because 1) I'm busy with other
projects 2) the last time I checked, I wasn't satisfied with the LED bulb
replacement options and 3) I'm not sure how well an Arduino would hold up in the
working environment of a PC800. Maybe there is an automotive shield available
for the Arduino? It would be a very interesting experiment...
