The Petcock Darkside or how I stopped worrying and learned how to lo
Written by douglasvanb on 11/19/2010 at 03:12 am

This afternoon I changed over my petcock to a brass T. I had previously rebuilt
my petcock but had a few problems that I wasn't able to trace down. At the
start of one ride my bike wouldn't rev above 1000 rpm after two blocks and
eventually left me pushing it back home. After I let it sit a few days it
didn't repeat the problem but I was worrying about it.

Finally this afternoon I did the 10 minute petcock-brass T switcheroo. The bike
is now running fine without the petcock. I put the petcock in the trunk to
serve as a warning to any other part that feels like giving me grief on the
bike.

In some ways I feel like I just castrated my PC. Now my bike is a castrato
complete with high-pitched musical voice in the form of the "fewweep fweeeep"
that comes out of the tail pipe. I hope my PC doesn't feel belittled when it
pulls up next to other PCs that are still "intact."

In other news, I rode up Marys Peak, a 4000+ foot hill near my town, this
evening in a cold rain. At about the 3000 foot mark I ran into snow on the road
and in the air. The castrated PC handled it admirably until I found a safe spot
to turn around. My passenger thought that such adventures are normal on a
motorcycle. No one tell her that bikes shouldn't be ridden in a half foot of
fresh, wet snow, okay? :-)

Cheers,

Douglas
