Adjusting rear shock ?

Welcome Tom.
As someone who's never adjusted the preload, (PO told me he hadn't either - so
I'm assuming it was last adjusted in Japan?) what would I notice by doing so?
Would it be for those long hauls with lots of gear? Would I need to then adjust
it back when I return? Or should I just leave it where it is, and has always
been, happily since 1996? Does anyone adjust the back shock frequently?
Curious in Hershey.
