Extra lights on the crashbars?
Written by csury on 4/10/2011 at 05:25 pm

I replaced my front and rear turn signal bulbs with amber 68-SMD LED 1157
equivalents in front, and amber 68-SMD LED 1156 equivalents in back. I also
installed red 68-SMD LED 1157 equivalents for my brake and rear running lights
as well and am quite happy with the results.

The replacement bulbs came from eBay with pricing varying from $12 to $17 a
pair, shipping included.

My turn signals flash more quickly now, but the self-cancelling still works same
as it did before. I thought about installing a load resistor to slow the flash
rate down a bit but to be honest, the flash rate isn't unacceptably fast now.

The instant on-and-off of the LED bulbs plus their high intensity makes for very
noticeable flashing, much more noticeable that the ordinary 1156 and 1157 bulbs
that used to be there.

something like an Arduino could replace the stock unit and would then be able to
support LEDs. However, I haven't done it yet because 1) I'm busy with other
projects 2) the last time I checked, I wasn't satisfied with the LED bulb
replacement options and 3) I'm not sure how well an Arduino would hold up in the
working environment of a PC800. Maybe there is an automotive shield available
for the Arduino? It would be a very interesting experiment...

Extra lights on the crashbars?
Hi, gang, The first owner of my PC installed some small, KMart-style lights below the front crashbars, using screws to anchor the brackets to the plastic itself. They don't light up the world, but they do create a nice triangle of l

Hi Jim, Having driven in the dark a great deal on more than one occassion, here are my thoughts on extra lighting, and installing it on a vehicle. Extra driving lights are great to help you avoid accidents, pedestrians, small animals, and

Hi Tom, Being somewhat new to the PC I am wondering how you attached your lights under the headlight?? I would like to mount lights farther apart and lower, but have not decided how to do that.? I like the looks of the ones mounted below

Guess I'd better sell my '94 PC, '85 CB650SC Nighthawk and '75 GL1000 Gold Wing. I'm way too old to even think about riding at 80.5 years. Dick MacInnes

I picked up a set of LED driving lights off ebay a year ago and haven't had the time to install them yet but they draw about 3 volts as I did hook them up to an old battery to check the amount of light they produced. Then left them on to see

I have a set of them mounted on some little brass clamps I made myself on the front of the crash bars. The clamps stick out of the hole in the front of the protector, and the amber LEDs, while not lighting up the road, definitely light up the

Do you have pictures of your setup, Mike? And what sort of circuitry are you using to drive your LED arrays? Did you convert over all of the other non-headlight lights on the bike to LED? Cheers, Douglas --- In

(Sorry for reiterating some of my earlier post, but...) I don't have explicit pictures of their individual installs, but I've put the ones I do have up with them on and running here:

Wow that's a nice setup! Are there any legal issues with festooning zillions of LEDs on the bike or by using amber, do you get around those problems? I know in Oregon that I can't put on undercarriage lights but I'm not sure about other sorts

How long have you been running the LED setup? I remember a post from a year or so ago where someone indicated that their self-canceling unit toasted itself after they converted to LED. Can't find the relevant post at the moment though. That i

I switched over to LED bulbs last fall, and haven't noticed any deterioration at all with turn signal function. My main reason was to reduce the power used by the two 23 or 25 watt 1157 brake light bulbs when I'm stuck and constantly usin

There aren't any legal issues as the ones that I'm using are really the same as the ones on trucks... Marker lights, in effect. I don't know why anyone would think undercarriage lights would be a bad thing... anything that gets you notice
