Still need windshield help
Written by daviddockstader on 6/13/2011 at 01:11 am

I think you will like riding with no windshield. That's how I ride every summer.
As I recall you were going to trade for a stock shield, which for me makes
unacceptable wind noise, so I think the person who backed out did you a favor.

If your old windshield is as bad as you say, you might just try cutting the top
off in ? inch increments and see if you can get to the point where you can see
over it and still not get too much wind noise. Another option is to cut the old
shield down to well below your site line and then add a nice new clear wind
deflector. There are several good commercial units on the market. My son got one
for his BMW GS Adventure that worked wonders for him. Someday I intend to try it
on my stock PC windshield and see what happens, but for the winter I was riding
with a Rifle and doing this experiment has not been a priority. In fact my PC
priority now is to replace my exhaust and fix the hole that the old exhaust
burned through my PC trunk!

Pulling windshields is easy. The shop manual is available online and gives a
good description of the process. First you rotate your mirrors to expose the two
screws that hold them on and remove them. Then it is pretty obvious how to get
the windshield off. Just keep track of where every screw, collar, and washer go
because some that look alike really aren't. After I take my windshield off, I
always put everything back together minus the windshield just so I'm sure
everything is where it should be for reinstalling the windshield next winter.

while the engine performed flawlessly, the windshield is so bad I'm convinced
it's dangerous. (I can't see ANYTHING through the shield at night at all, and
the day is getting near that.)

find someone with a really good price for a used one. (Anyone?)

(Unless I can use a circular saw with a plywood blade. No? I didn't think so.)

down as low as possible, but since at least one person thinks the shield is
repairable, I'd hate to have do that. If I can take it off in one piece, I'm
willing to ship it for the shipping cost.
