Dark Side for a Day: a Metzeler guy's thoughts on The Dark Side
Written by wbpc800 on 6/15/2011 at 04:17 am

Douglas,

Thanks for the write up! As a darksider for the past couple of years it seems
about right to me. Curious about the pressure though. haven't really noticed the
squirrlieness but I may not push it that far. (Waiting for the right sight lines
and knowing that there is no oil or gravel;-)

I needed a new front and wanted to patronize a local business in a town far away
where I actually earn a significant amount of my money - and afforded me the
opportunity to have pie with Dave H.;-)

The tire guy refused to mount the battlax backwards. That made me do more
research and found the suggestion from someone here to try the Avon Roadrider
"universal" tire. (Frankly I am pretty sure this is nothing more than a rear
tire mounted backwards that is officially sanctioned by the manufacturer.)

A little more research said that this is a newer design than the battlax. Having
not tried the Battlax, I can't say one way or another. However, while riding AR
scenic 7 I actually had to pull over because I was drowsy! If that doesn't say
something about being "boring" in its stability I don't know what does;-) I have
no trouble recommending the roadrider. FWIW, I love the Metzler that you have
and leland doesn't trust. I think the roadrider is its equal only with more
tread and about half price. YMMV.

Bart, a local PCer, was kind enough to loan me his ride with this configuration.
I gave him my PC800 equipped with Metzeler tires front and rear. Bart's bike
has maybe 3,000 miles on the tires. Mine has about 300 miles.
