Speedometer cable breaking Mystery
Written by kjhoconnor on 1/19/2012 at 04:53 pm

My thinking is, the only way the cable would break close to the speedo head is
that it locked up and the cable still spinning until it broke. I did take the
speedo all a part, examine all the gears, shafts and what not, and even hooked a
drill on it and ran it 40+ miles and works smoothly. I guess at this point is to
put it all together with a new cable and see what happens..

cable. I removed the cable from the front wheel and it would not spin. I then
took it loose at the speedo and it spun freely. I repeated this process a couple
of times so as to determine that my speedometer was locked up. I haven't taken
the front wheel apart yet, but I assume the plastic gear in there is shot. I
can't think of anything but a speedometer issue that would cause what you are
describing. Enjoy fun & safe riding!! Dave "YT" Hoover

street to find that the cable / speedometer worked fine.

not working again. Removed the speedo cable from housing to find cable broke
again about 2" from speedometer head. Which leads me to beleive something is
locking up or broken gear in the head. Attached a drill on it to view the
workings of what turns internally. From what I can tell no broken gears and
everything seems to operate smoothly.
