Bike won't start
Written by mlipmd on 3/31/2012 at 03:52 pm

Thanks for that advice about the OEM screwdriver, that worked after some effort.
I got the switch out, and that seems to be OK - with a continuity tester there
is no contact in the OFF position and there is continuity through the switch in
the ON position. So I'm putting it all back together and now looking for
somewhere else as to why it won't start. Keep up the good help, any suggestions
are greatly appreciated.
All the indicator lights work, the bike's in neutral (rear wheel spins freely up
on the center stand), side stand up or down, clutch in, starter and engine
spins, no ignition. Guess I have to pull it apart again and check for spark?

one apart. I found a lot of pitting on the contacts, so cleaning would not have
done much for too long. I have a new dimmer switch on the way now. This one was
new last year, but the low setting does. Of always work and a sideways wiggle of
the switch is needed to make contact.

them up a little with some fine sandpaper just because I had them out, and
reinstalled them. All the fuses are visually intact, nothing burned out. I
cannot get the handlebar cover off to get at the stop/run switch because I
cannot turn one of those damn screws underneath even though they are into
plastic and right now I don't want to strip the head. I probably need one of
those Japanese screwdrivers to get a better grip on it. Is there something that
can be sprayed onto that switch that may find it's way in there and clean the
contacts? Any suggestions as to what to do next? The bike turns over well but
absolutely will not catch, not a sputter or cough like it wants to run.

and that has no effect. How do you check the switch to see if it's good? You
have to remove it? Does that switch in the RUN position make or break a contact
(like the kill switch in an outboard makes a contact to short out the ignition
system and stop the engine)?

it wouldn't hold a charge for more than a day, and maybe would start the bike
right after being on the charger, but not the next day.

old one, charged it up fully as you are supposed to (was at 13.5V when I put it
in the bike and was 12.9 a few hours later), took off all the right side covers
and changed out the battery. Now the bike cranks over fine, nice and fast,
battery still has good voltage, but the bike won't start no matter what, choke,
no choke. It always started within 1-2 seconds before and has been running fine,
no problems. And now the battery's back on the charger to top it off again.

disconnected something when removing and replacing the 4 covers on the right
side, but I did this pretty carefully and had no difficulty.

so I put about a gallon of fresh gas in the tank from a can I had (now it reads
a little less then half full). I always put some Berryman's B12 Chemtool in the
gas just to keep the carb clean from getting gummed up, especially if the bike
will sit for a few weeks, but I guess having the tank low I could have sucked
some dirt, if there was any in the fuel tank, into the carb.
