Avon AM26 Roadrider Tire eval
Written by alfr4d on 5/15/2012 at 12:46 am

Thanks for reporting. Not any such mishap here. Do you have it mounted in the
right direction? It has two arrows on it but that is not the same as to be
mounted in any direction you prefer. When up front it should look like the wrong
way around, forcing the water towards the middle so to say (thus providing
better braking like it is done on many more modern big-bikes). If not, then
internal damage must have been done to the stacking layers of enforcing
material, not only applying the brake but also riding over boulders.

I recently wrote about cupping. With low tire pressure the end of each patch,
and sometimes certain spots on the tire, will give way leading to more friction
and more wear. These spots will become far more low. You won't see it much but
you sure can feel it with your hand. Now a 2.000 miles is only a smaller
distance for a new tire and you did notice vibrations from day one. I do not
expect that to have happened yet but your low tire pressure will eventually lead
to such damage. Better move it up to 40 and re-balance the wheel. Check the two
wheel bearings while they balance or just have them replaced prematurely to be
on the save side. Removing and mounting the wheel may have given them the final
blow with a hammer. Go back to the dealer for guarantee when nothing helps.
Fabrication of tires is a complicated thing and some tires do have to go back.
Are you sure you did not bounce into something big? These are road tires but
only look better. No matter how you're into rubber, it will void your warranty
going off-road. By the way, I did not want the balancing weight on my wheel but
added nylon pearls for making rag-dolls. The tire does not have a dot where it
is lightest like the Dunlops do have and I wonder how much weight could have
been added to your rim, this being so much more of a guess. I will stick with my
home brewed dynamic balancing beads and the valve tool that I have to carry with
me as part of the deal. Alfred
