Galen,

The bike should start with the clutch pulled in without getting the neutral light, it will start in gear with the clutch pulled in. If it doesn't the switch at the clutch lever is bad, miss adjusted, or disconnected.
Are you sure you have it in neutral when it is hot or is it jumping back and forth past neutral when you try find it.
