Galen,

Echoing Fred here, you might be jumping past neutral. Compared to all the other bikes I previously or currently own, the PC800 is particularly tricky for me to find neutral. In fact, I normally have to find it using my hand! It seems to be harder to find when I am a little bit low on oil. Maybe check your oil, use your hand, and see if you can feel the half-click on the shifter?
