New Reid Rack -- Discussion and Progress
Written by goldwingman40 on 10/25/2004 at 12:15 am

David,
The Givi rack covers up the lines of the bike and will not work with
the upper trunk spoiler. The bars are quite thick because of the
material they are made of. The Honda backrest breckets are not heavy
enough to carry the rack plus backrest, some have broken with just
the backrest, because of the design loading istwisting. Also not all
people have the Honda backrest so they would not have the mount. Bob
Viena built a mountout of 3/16" x 1 1/2" steel bar welded to mount
the Givi rack plate and to clear the spoiler fin. The rack plate
still blocks the lines of the bike because it is so solid because of
being made of reinforced plastic. Dan Birrell made a rack by cutting
brackets out of sheet steel and the rack out of 3/8" rod. It cleared
the spoiler fin and had a provision to mount a backrest. He used a
Utopia on his. The first one was longer than he liked because his
wife hit her foot when swinging it over the back getting on. He then
made a shorter one. The open structure with the rods does not hide
the lines of the bike. Something like this would be usable by a lot
more members.
