Rover's last ride: a eulogy
Written by humpthegrump on 8/18/2006 at 11:01 pm

Yes indeed, it is good John did not join his motorcycle in the ?totaled?
category?.

And Dean is correct about modulated lights really helping.

While I don?t have modulated or flashing brake lights, I make it a habit
when stopping wherever a vehicle can approach me from the rear to keep about
10?-12? back from the vehicle in front of me, and I move to the side of the
lane that allows me egress. And I point my bike toward that egress point.

Watch the mirrors! If you see traffic approaching, release and then ?flash?
your brakes two or three times before re-applying them. Of course you are
in first gear, clutch in, left foot on ground, and ready to accelerate into
your egress point.

?One of these days? I will get a third brake lamp, probably LED?s, maybe
modulated, and install it in the ducktail or under the ?Reid Rack? but in
the mean time, I hope my luck is better than Johns.

BMW has a system you can add to your bike: It has a very bright additional
(3rd) brake lamp that has a built in fast-flash-four-times-then-on-steady
that seems ideal, but it costs almost $150 for parts alone, and of course is
made of rare Bavarian materials in keeping with the BMW need for expensive,
er, I mean quality parts?.

Get well and ride again, John!

Hi, John...

Like many others, I'm glad you survived to tell us your tale.

This is another reason I have the Signal Dynamics "Back-Off"
brakelight modulator installed. When stopped in traffic, I sit with
my foot on the brake, and the modulator continues to flash until I
start to move and get off the brake.

I can't help but think that the flashing of the brakelights would
help (but not guarantee) an inattentive driver notice that the bike
is stopped in front of them.

My two cents just hit the table.
