retainer = little plastic piece that goes from the wheel to the valve
stem
after the 90deg turn. How did the valve stems fail?"
The retainer was in place but not fully functional on mine; the keeper
had broken off years before. It held the stem when pushing but let it
rise a little more than with a fully functional retainer; that was just
enough apparently. I now have a new valve stem AND retainer. We'll see
a few years from now...
Mine failed from too much pushing on it too hard over too many years.
Gave way right around the base next to the rim.
