VTX1100 rear drive replacementWritten by jdkkrause on 8/12/2009 at 11:54 pmHi,
I have a '95 PC and installed the VT1100 rear end about 6 weeks ago.
I also run 150/90 rear tires. Here's the scoop:
The VT Rear end + 150/90 combo rresults:
Pros:
Roughly combined, it is noticably more than the total difference as
you already have between 4th & 5th on a stock PC.
MPG is roughly 3 mpg higher (about 2mpg of which comes from the drive).
Cons:
1st gear definately feels taller and my old 147,000 mile clutch shudders a
bit
when starting out in 1st. Also, the 'new' 5th gear feels too high for
passing duty.
For me 5th gear became relegated to 'overdrive' duty only.
How to's:
There is more than one model of rear end on VT1100s It depends upon the
year.
Make sure the rear casting looks nearly identical to your old one. The
correct
rear drive has four mounting bolts. apparently some VTs had three bolts.
The 150/90 rear is not recomended for '89 PCs due to a slight difference in
the trunk interior shell (wheel well).
However even on '90+ PCs you must flatten the swingarm welded flange
that arcs across the crotch of the swingarm by grinding the flange away
with small disk grinder (small enough to get into the space).
Don't grind too much away as this flange does serve a purpose!
Alternately you can heat the flange up with a torch and pound it down flat
but that is only safely done with the swingarm completely removed from the
bike.
I've also had on occasion tire rubbing on the SIDE of the swingarm.
There are substantial dimensional differences between tires that are
all marked the same size. Don't trust that one brand/model will always fit
just because it is marked then same size.
Generally I would recommend the 140/90 instead to avoid all this nonsense.
A 140/90 with the VT rear end is likely your best improvement in reducing
RPM
with the least amount of fuss or worry.
Best Regards,
Jeff Krause

Hello I have a 1990 with 48678 miles. I have owned it since 1992 with 1200
miles on it .I am always looking for that 6th gear.I read about changing out
the rear drive/end with one off a vt1100.Could anyone help me out with this?
Is it a direct swap out? Are there certain years you can only use? do u need
to make any custom parts.
I am also now looking for the biggest and widest rear tire to put on does
anyone have any info on this? a 140/80-15 is stock will a 150/90-15 fit or
can you get away with a 170/80-15
