Re: Locking a helmet.
You might want to get a Flexweave cable. A 6 foot long, 3/16 inch diameter
cable and a small padlock will let you lock your helmet to a seat grab rail and
then set it on the ground in the shade. It can also be threaded through the
sleeve of a jacket. (Don't leave the keys in a jacket pocket!)

helmet, e.g. from a handlebar, while locking it to a grab rail or fork tube.
More expensive, more fiddly, more protection from the elements.
