A few general battery questions
Written by desert_ratt_... on 6/8/2010 at 06:32 pm

If you don't ride a lot (less than 3 times/week average) and/or it tends to sit
a long time in the winter, I would definitely invest in a battery tender. A
solar charger works fine to keep a battery topped up, but I don't think it would
help much once a battery has gone dead. I have been thinking of getting a solar
charger, but I actually have an outlet in my garage, but not sun. I just swap
the battery tender every couple days to keep all 3 bikes topped up. It's easy
enough to put the clamps on the PC800 by just opening the trunk, and the GS500
is also easy access just by lifting the seat. The CBR is hard to get to (need
to unscrew to hex bolts), so I put a harness on it under the pillion seat to
make it easy to plug in.

Otherwise, a battery that spends a lot of time at less than 70% charge or so
will generally only last 2-3 years, in my experience.
