Front Fender Mod-ST1100
Written by woodshed48 on 7/7/2010 at 01:07 pm

I wish I had taken pictures of the inside of the ST1100 fender. I felt like I
needed to attain the most support I could from the fender/fork "wrap around".
What my pictures don't show is that on the inside, there are 3 or 4 built-in
plastic strips in the "cupped" area that allow the fender to rest against the
fork on those strips. I thought that if I made the most of that, it would make
the fender more stable when the wind was blowing against it, plus it would be
less apt to try to move, since I really haven't locked it down hard with the
bolting.

With that priority, I allowed the gaps to be what you see in the pictures. I did
double check to ensure that nothing was close enough to be a rub on the fender
from the tire.

I did try to put the short bottom bracket inside, but would have made me pull
the plastic out of position and it wouldn't have laid correctly on the fork. The
existing fork tab bolt hole is flush on the front of the fork on the inside
(exit side), so I couldn't figure out how to attach a bracket there, as the hole
would be at the edge of the bracket. Chromed parts would have looked better, but
the brass doesn't look too bad. I did round the edges of the brackets.

I hope that helps in the description.

think mine will be a bit more involved as I am modifying the forks (or I think
I'm going to mod the forks...). I will post how this goes once all the parts
are in.

front vs rear. Did you look into trying to rotate the fender a bit to close the
front gap? The ST-1100 fender is ment for a 18" wheel, we have a 17" wheel, so
there will be some increased gap in the fender. I am looking to balance the gap
if possible. Second, the braces holding the fender. Have you looked into
mounting them on the inside of the fender? If you paint the fork lower black
like the ST-1100 have, you can paint your braces and they will nnot stand out as
much.

looked on EBay and found a cheap one ($25 + shipping), and figured that it was a
reasonable gamble to try it out, since I was already riding "fenderless" (in the
desert-no rain).

hopefully showing how I mounted it and how nicely the tire fit under it. I
forgot to take assembly photos, if there is interest, I will add some when I
remove it to paint it.

inside of the fender between the front and rear bolt holes. I left that in place
to provide stiffening and stability. As you can see, the front part of the
fender wraps around the fork. At the top, I installed a 1" x 1-1/8" rubber cork
from the hardware store. I had to shave it down on 3 sides to make it 1". I
pressed it into the fender and drilled a hole for the 6mm bolt to hold it in
place for dampening against the fork, so it doesn't rub and wear out. (that is
the top front bolt)

small town, and that is what I could find) from the rear fork tab to the fender,
using 2-1/4" 6mm bolts (SS) at the bottom and an existing one from the old
fender at the top. I used a thinner brass piece on the bottom front tab, and
bent it using 2 pliers. The top attachment was drilled through the fender.
