engine cutting out
Written by douglasvanb on 7/25/2010 at 09:45 pm

I have something similar happening to my bike. At freeway speed going up a
steep incline (6% or more) and with a hot engine, the bike will start
decelerating of its own volition. Letting off the throttle completely and then
reapplying alleviates it for between 10 and 30 seconds before it'll happen
again. It only corrects itself after I crest the hill and start down the other
side.

As I am away from my bike at the moment, I haven't been able to finish
diagnosing and determining what is wrong. The suspect list that I will check
when I get back to my PC includes:

-Fuel filter / fuel pump (clogging fuel filter)
-Vacuum hose leak causing the petcock to shut
-Carbs out of sync
-Air intake/cleaner not properly attached to carbs
-Bad spark plugs
-Petcock going bad
-Carbs need cleaning/rebuild

That list is in no specific order and YMMV.

Another suspect for you might be something in your electrical system. Have you
lost power at any other time like that?

Cheers,

Douglas

from work, rolled on the throttle for about a minute to get up with traffic and
then the engine stopped running, pulled the clutch in and tried to throttle but
nothing then with the clutch still out but coasting I was able to throttle up
and ride on. This happened several times in the last two days, to and from
work.
