one) and the fuel gauge is woefully inadequate. (Yes, I know there's a fix, but
I'm no mechanic and I have zero money to have my mechanic do it.)

If you can't modify the bike, then you must modify your behavior. The fuel gauge
is entirely adequate as it comes from the factory (it is actually quite precise
if a bit inaccurate). You don't need to adjust the sender, merely the way you
read the gauge. You can do this because it IS precise. You can be confident the
volume of fuel remaining in the tank will be the same every time at a given
needle position.

You also have, as someone else pointed out, the tripmeter that you can use as a
dead-reckoning tool.

For emergencies, you can carry a camping-fuel aluminum bottle. If you don't like
the idea of having it inside the trunk, you can always put it inside one of
these:

someone else in the state who KNEW the bike and could teach me about the ins and
outs of the bike (I do much better with hands-on help than written), it would
help, but I feel VERY alone out here.

That you are not. Just from memory, I remember that there is at least one other
in Los Alamos. Have you checked the owner registry files? They give you names
and locations, and can be sorted by city and state.

We all do it from time to time. Good luck!
