25000 miles later on the VT1100 experiment
Written by spacetiger_j... on 9/30/2010 at 02:19 am

Anton,

I made this swap because of your previous work. Thank you for your efforts, as
I didn't have that thought on my radar screen. I have found this mod to be very
worthwhile.

Here is what I found:
1. RPM is down in every gear, a little over 8%
2. Gas mileage is up a bit - but I did not make the swap for improved mileage.

I made the swap for for relaxed riding at highway speed. When I saw the HP and
Torque curves, I knew the drop in RPM would not be that noticeable - especially
at highway speeds. Before the swap, it would pull almost 4,000 RPM at 60. Now,
its a bit over 3,500 RPM. At 70, I turn almost 4,200 RPM. The bike runs at more
relaxed pace.

Jerry

first person to do the VT1100 final drive swap, (and that I haven't checked in
here for a while...) I thought I'd give an update.

always been. The VT1100 gearing gives a consistent 45mpg, and that's with no sub
airbox lid and a lot of rejetting, leading to 51hp.

replacement engine in it this winter, as the transmission has been shaky the
whole time I've owned this bike. That said, it hasn't gotten any worse in 30k

the caveat that some rejetting and perhaps some stronger clutch springs would be
a good idea.

if you do many highway miles it extends the mileage and comfort zone 5-7mph,
which is enough here in the SF Bay area to be adequate in traffic.
