25000 miles later on the VT1100 experiment
Written by spacetiger_j... on 9/30/2010 at 02:47 am

Anton,

I forgot to add this. When your engine goes (hopefully not too soon, consider
swapping out the engine for the VT1100 engine. I have been studying this and
thing it may be possible to do this. That said, it's always the the last 5% of
work that soaks up the $'s...

I should think some mild work would produce some serious go ability, but not
necessarily like a ST1100. I should think it would be like driving a VW TDI
with the good torque. Close to 70 ft-lb vs. close to 50 ft-lb. But, the PC
makes peak torque over 5,000 RPM (although you are over 90% or torque available
over 2,000 RPM. The VT1100 has peak torque at only 2,750 RPM... With that much
torque down low, you should swap out the rear wheel for a 17" wheel from a
ST1100 ABS and while you're at swap out the front brakes for the ABS :-)

as I didn't have that thought on my radar screen. I have found this mod to be
very worthwhile.

and Torque curves, I knew the drop in RPM would not be that noticeable -
especially at highway speeds. Before the swap, it would pull almost 4,000 RPM
at 60. Now, its a bit over 3,500 RPM. At 70, I turn almost 4,200 RPM. The bike
runs at more relaxed pace.

here for a while...) I thought I'd give an update.

always been. The VT1100 gearing gives a consistent 45mpg, and that's with no sub
airbox lid and a lot of rejetting, leading to 51hp.

the caveat that some rejetting and perhaps some stronger clutch springs would be
a good idea.

if you do many highway miles it extends the mileage and comfort zone 5-7mph,
which is enough here in the SF Bay area to be adequate in traffic.
