Fails to start or turn over
Written by eegah_yai on 10/9/2010 at 05:39 am

I just had a very similar problem. Put a new Yuasa battery in last June to
replace a 4-year-old Walmart battery. The Walmart battery was not bad, but I
wanted peace of mind for a 10-day trip around Lake Superior. I remember I was a
bit surprised that the new battery did not turn over the engine any quicker than
the old one. Anyway, I never made it on the Superior trip, (the girlfriend won
the vacation negotiations for this year) and have only put 1,000 miles or so on
the bike since then, riding once or twice a week. (been riding the V-Strom a
lot) The voltage monitor would do some strange things at times, and the bike
seemed to turn over a bit slower at times but generally things seemed to be
normal. I thought maybe it was because the bike sat longer between starts than
most years. Then, the bike let me sit at midnight at work last week as it would
not turn over. I charged my old Walmart battery and the new one, and took turns
with them trying to start the bike. I also checked the voltage when the bike was
running. Turns out the new battery is bad. It must have a bad cell or something
. The old Walmart battery is in it now, and it works fine. The new battery won't
have power enough to start the bike. I'm in the process now of arranging a
warranty replacement.
So, just cause the battery is new, doesn't mean it's good. Hope your problem is
as simple.
Mike

thing is that as soon as I hit the starter switch everything turned off. No
lights, nothing. I took the key out and put it back in and turned it but nothing
came back on. After pulling the fuses in the front and inspecting them the
lights came back on when I tried to turn it on. But everything died when I tried
to start it again. After turning the key to the off position and back on the
lights came back, but not the 3rd time. After pulling the fuses again (this time
I pulled the main 30amp fuse) the lights came back on when I turned the key. At
this point I just wanted to get home so I push started it in 2nd gear and it
started right up. Basically whenever I hit the starter switch everything stops
working and the starter doesn't crank.

months ago but I fixed it and have been riding it the last few months. The only
possible electrical problem I am aware of is that the blinkers blink quickly.
(I'm not sure if it is too fast or not.)
