Strange VIN number
Written by dl_page on 10/29/2010 at 11:40 am

Hi Leland,

We use VIN numbers all over Europe now, and that actually was my problem: I
don't get how the administration registered my bike with only the serial number,
but they did, although they did have to get a manager out of the registration
service office to finalise the registration at the sub-prefecture rather then
being procesed by the desk drones like everyone else.

Some manufacturers in Europe actually produce 30-40 character VIN codes, but
anything over the 17 character mark is manufacturer specific, designating
upholstry types, internal and external colors etc etc etc ad nauseam!

I wrote a VIN decoder years ago for one of my employers (EurotaxGlass's A.K.A
Eurotax Schwake A.K.A Glass's Guide), but only valid for decomposing passenger
vehicle VIN codes, and to be honest, 8 years later, I have not a clue how they
go together again!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the information, and I'll try to do some back tracing.

Cheers,
Daniel
